Leila is still wearing cloth nappies most of the time. The exceptions are overnight and when we go out. These are the times when I don’t feel like dealing with the bits and pieces required (nappy cover, nappy & liner) and handling a wet, possibly pooey, piece of flannelette.
She has outgrown the flat nappies I made for her so I’ve started to convert them into prefolds using this pattern (scroll down, it’s under the menstrual pad pattern). They’re perfect for a sewing ignoramus like me. They’re quick, easy, kind of fun to make and they work very well - better than flat nappies and as well as the shaped ones I’ve bought.
Thus far I’ve only used fabric I already had around the house. It’s been a bit of a challenge to find sufficient fabric to make the soaker pads thick enough. I’ve ‘repurposed’ an old flanny shirt that I had only been wearing to die my hair, an old towel and some bunny rugs that weren’t being used. I’m eyeing off any piece of clothing not being worn much for its nappy potential.
I have 2 shaped nappies that I bought from here and they’re very cute and work well too. I briefly considered the idea of using one of them as a template and making my own. But the plain prefolds I’ve made are fine. There’s no reason to complicate things unnecessarily.
My aim is to have 3 or 4 days worth of nappies - 24-30 - to get me through winter. I hoping to be able to wash every 2 or 3 days and have a day’s supply to use while the washed ones dry. I want to avoid using the dryer too much, since at least part of the point of this exercise is to be both economical and energy efficient and the dryer is neither.
Leila is sitting now is one of her little rocker-type seats. This keeps her upright to reduce to milk coming back but also lets her look about which she likes. As an added thing as she throws her arms and weight generally around it makes it rock which I think she likes.
Our normal night time routine is that Leila goes to bed at about 7pm, has a feed around 10pm and then goes back to bed for the night. She usually wakes anytime between about 3.30 & 4.30 to be fed and then goes back to bed until 7-ish.
Last night she went to bed at 7.30, but woke at 8.30 because she’d thrown up on herself and was a bit wet and cold. I changed her clothes, fed her and had her back in bed by 9. I expected that her next feed would be earlier too. I was wrong.
Leila didn’t wake again until about 5.30, after which she went back to sleep and stayed that way until 8.30. 8 and a half hours, followed by another 2 and a half. That’s a personal sleeping best for the Little Princess.
The first time a baby ’sleeps through’ is always very exciting and it’s tempting to believe that it heralds the beginning of unbroken nights, but that’s not necessarily so. Firstly, I am hardwired to wake by 4.30am because my body believes I need to. Last night I was awake from about 3am and stayed that way mostly because I was rather uncomfortable (and partly because Finn woke and came to join us). And secondly, just as a swallow does not a summer make, one night does not a sleeping through baby make. Finn continued to wake once each night for months and months so I shouldn’t expect Leila to be any different.
Still, it is quite exciting…
